Drive Shaft

A drive shaft also called as propeller shaft or cardan shaft connects transmission of the vehicle to the differential. Transmitting torque between the engine/transmission system and the wheels is the simple purpose that drive shaft serve. Drive shaft transfers the rotation energy to the wheels through a gear system housed in the differential.

Driveshaft Joints

When the shafts are relatively long, usually joint shafts are used to connect propeller shaft. Drive Shafts Joints uses some prominent joint designs but the most commonly used joint is universal joint shaft and constant-velocity joints. Universal joint shaft also called as Universal coupling or U-joint is a joint that is used to join two rods which are inclined to each other at their axes. This coupling is mostly used in shafts that used to transmit rotary motion or power.  It is actually pair of things put close to each other inclined at 90ᵒ and connected by universal shaft. Constant-velocity joints are used to maintain constant rotation speed between two components of the driving shaft, even at significant angles. If deviation angle becomes large universal joints generate vibration and angular momentum discrepancies. In drive shafts design of constant-velocity joints and U-joint are as important as the driveshaft itself.
