Propeller shaft is used to transmit the drive force generated by the engine to the axles when the engine and axles are separated from each other. When the shaft is longer it is more liable to bend and bending is further promoted when rotation is applied causing vibrations and resulting in an increase in noise. Hence in order to suppress vibrations arising from any cause the propeller shaft is designed.

Main functions of propeller shaft

Propeller shaft or a cardan shaft is a mechanical component for transmitting torque and rotation, usually used to connect other components of a drive train that cannot be connected directly because of distance or the need to allow for relative movement between them. Propeller shaft make any machine move. Drive shafts are carriers of torque: they are subject to torsion and shear stress, equivalent to the difference between the input torque and the load. They must therefore be strong enough to bear the stress, whilst avoiding too much additional weight as that would in turn increase their inertia.

Propeller Shaft

Propeller Shaft is the shaft that transmits power from the gearbox to the differential gear in a motor vehicle from the engine to the propeller in a boat or flying machine.

Types of Propeller Shaft:

  1. Single-Piece-Type Propeller Shaft:

Need for Offset Shaft Alignment

Cardan Shaft or Offset Shaft with u-joints or typically called as drive shaft is used to transfer power from a driver shaft to a piece of driven shaft. Offset shaft means the shafts of the driver and driven elements are not in line with each other. In the cardan shaft assembly there can be any number of u-joints. For example a single Cardan shaft means in a cardan shaft assembly there is a u-joint at each end of a shaft. If cardan shaft assembly contains double Cardan shaft then it means that three or more u-joints in a shaft are used. But the most encountered shaft in an industry is a single Cardan shaft.

There are two parts that must be understood, proper phasing and angularity of the input and output shafts.


1.      Phasing refers to the position of the yokes that are part of the shaft. The two ends, or yokes, must be positioned parallel, or in line with each other. Failure to do this will cause the driven machine to speed up and slow down twice for every revolution of the driver. This will cause runability problems, as well as high vibration issues.



2.      The angularity of the input (driver) and output (driven) shafts in relation to the main shaft element must be equal at each end of the shaft. When the driven machine and the drive are aligned correctly, place the shaft ends in the correct position.
