Universal Coupling

Universal coupling also called as universal joint shaft or U-joint is a joint that is used to join two rods which are inclined to each other at their axes. This coupling is mostly used in shafts that used to transmit rotary motion or power.  It is actually pair of things put close to each other inclined at 90ᵒ and connected by universal shaft.
Universal joint shaft or universal coupling is more commonly used in following applications.

  • Aircraft
  • Driveshaft
  • Control mechanisms
  • Control mechanisms
  • Medical and optical devices
  • Radio
  • Belt conveyors
  • Metal forming machinery
  • Appliances
  • Centrifugal blowers
  • Electronic instruments
  • Sewing machines
  • Tool drivers
  • Stone crushers

Universal joint shaft is made up of several parts including Collar, Pin, Fork, Taper Pin and Central Block. Shaft and Shaft key are not actually integrated in universal joint but are required to complete the assembly of the joint.

The Universal joint is connected to the different parts of the machine via drive shaft. Centre block in the universal joint serves a role of basic building block by supporting the forks used in joint. Centre block is nothing but two hollow cylinders perpendicularly joined with each other. Holes in the Cylinders help in accommodation of pins.

In order to provide support to shaft two forks are used. Fork consists of a hole at centre to support shaft. Additionally it consists of two more holes to support a pin. The centered hole in the fork also supports a key-way to accommodate shaft key.  A Pin secures the fork to the centre block and contains a tapered hole to accommodate taper pin. As similar to forks there is also a pair of pins to support two forks in shaft.
