Shaft coupling, Uses and Types

A shaft in a machine is a metallic, rotating and oscillating rod that rotates continually to transfer movements or torque in the machine. Types of shaft coupling

 

1.     Rigid Couplings

When two shafts are coaxial to each other rigid couplings are used to avoid misalignment between them. There are mainly two couplings that fall under rigid coupling type. They are

1.     Rigid Sleeve or Muff Couplings

2.     Flanged Coupling 

2. Flexible or Compensating Couplings

Flexible couplings also known as elastic couplings are basically used where the coaxiallity between the connecting shafts is not always assured.
