A shaft is a metallic, rotating and oscillating rod that rotates continually to transfer movements or torque in the machine. Shaft is usually used to connect other components of machine that cannot be connected due to distance between them and to allow relative motion between them. Shafts are connected with the help of universal joint coupling and universal joint cross on each end. There can be any number of u-joints in a cardan shaft assembly.

Drive shafts are carriers of torque: they are subject to torsion and shear stress, equivalent to the difference between the input torque and the load. They must therefore be strong enough to bear the stress, whilst avoiding too much additional weight as that would in turn increase their inertia. Drive shafts frequently incorporate one or more universal joints shaft or jaw couplings, and sometimes a splined joint or prismatic joint to allow for variations in the alignment and distance between the driving and driven components.

Since universal joints shaft without coupling can not allows all movements for ensuring sufficient lubrication cardan shafts are normally installed with an angle from 4 to 6 degrees at the universal joints. Need for shaft alignment

The driven machine and the drive are used to place the shaft ends in the correct position and hence need to be aligned correctly. That is, driven machine and the drive will make the angle of the yokes on both ends of the shaft equal when the driven and driver are on parallel planes in the vertical and horizontal axes. The speed of the driven machine will fluctuate if driver and driven machines are not aligned. The worse the angular misalignment, the worse the speed fluctuation.
